Plant in a sunny position against a wall in well drained soil from spring onwards. Soak the roots and tease them from the rootball before planting. Dig a hole twice the size of the rootball and dig in plenty of grit to improve the drainage if necessary. Position the plant in the centre of the hole, ensuring the top of the rootball is level with the soil surface. Back fill the hole and firm the soil around the roots. Water well after planting. Neither very acid or very alkaline soil suit this shrub. The protection of a wall is desirable in most districts and essential in colder areas.
This is fairly tender shrub that usually needs to be grown in a sheltered position on a sunny wall to survive. Prune each year after flowering.
Specific Feeding:
Cytissus are adapted to growing on poor soils, however applying a high potash feed (such sulphate of potash) in spring should improve flowering.
