Sow: Indoors, February-March and harden off and plant out in early May. Or sow in an unheated green house in March-April.
If planting outdoors wait until the danger of frost is over in early June and plant 45 cm apart in rich well cultivated soil.
Sow 6mm (1/4in) deep in a good compost. Germination usually takes 6-14 days at 24C (75F). Transplant the seedlings when large enough to handle into 8cm (3in) pots and grow on in good light and cooler conditions. When 15-23cm (6-9in) tall plant out 45cm (18in) apart in a prepared greenhouse border soil, growbag, 23cm (9in) pots or ring culture.
Growing Temp 65-85 degrees F Remove side shoots as they appear and pinch out the growing point when 5-7 trusses have been formed.
Feed regularly once the first truss has set. To grow outdoors, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out after all risk of frost has past.
Plant Spacing: 18"-24" Soil borne diseases can build up rapidly so a good rotation system is needed and once any disease does appear it is usually sensible to grow your plants elsewhere.
Days to Maturity: 70-80 days
All tomatoes need full sun and rich moist soil or compost. They need to be grown in a rich soil and warm sunny position protected from cold temperatures.
Pinch out side shoots and feed weekly once flowers form.
Plants exposed to chilling will abort their flowers; so in cooler parts of the country do not sow too early unless they can be kept in a heated greenhouse or conservatory.
Support plants and pinch out side shoots as they appear. Water daily and when the first trusses have set apply a liquid feed every two weeks.
The tomato is a bush variety and a support is needed. This can be either a tall, stout cane or a string tied to the base of the planted and secured to a wire or strut in the greenhouse roof.
If using the string method of support, wind the string around the stem, supporting the plant under the leaves not the flower trusses.
Feed every week to a fortnight with a high potash liquid tomato feed. This will not only keep the plant growing strongly but help improve the flavour of the fruits. Watering is very important. It must be done regularly never allowing the plants to dry out.
The photograph shows split skin caused by irregular watering. Irregular watering causes the fruit to split because the skin hardens in dry conditions then splits when the fruit swells after the plant has been watered.
It is also good to soak the ground around the plants in hot weather to reduce the temperature and increase the humidity.
Dry air can affect pollination and encourage red spider mite infestation. Throughout the summer ventilate the greenhouse crops well, particularly when the fruit begins to ripen, a build up of ethylene, the gas given off ripening fruit will cause the foliage to curl and distort.
When growing the vine or indeterminate types, the fruit are grown on a single stem. Pinch out any side shoots as they form.
Once the plant has reached the top of the cane or string pinch out the top and allow the fruit to swell.
If the tomatoes are slow to ripen strip off the lower leaves to allow sun to reach the fruit.
Specific Feeding:
Feeding should be done every one to two weeks with a high potash fertiliser. Special tomato fertilisers are very good and readily available in garden centres.
