Hostas benefit from plenty of organic matter being added to the soil before planting.
They do not like hot drying winds so plant in a shady sheltered position.
In an established, well maintained border simply plant in a clear area, allowing room for the plant to spread. Dig a hole a little larger than the pot, and place the plant into the hole, so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Fill in the remaining gaps, firming the soil as you go. Finally water in well, and keep watering regularly until the plant has established. In an old tired soil, dig the ground over the depth of a garden fork, removing any weeds as you go. Fork in some well rotted organic matter, and follow the steps mentioned above for planting. Finally add a mulch to the surface, which will protect the plant from drying out.
Before the plant begins to grow in late spring ensure that the previous years growth has been removed. You may choose to do this either in spring or autumn. Remove the flower heads once they have gone over, and any damaged leaves.
Keep slugs off your hostas.
Specific Feeding:
Mulching a border annually in the winter months with well-rotted organic matter will provide sufficient food for these plants. The worms will take the material into the soil, which improves its structure and nutrient levels. On a poor soil adding a fast release granular feed will provide a quick fix early in the season, and although good on it's own, is better used alongside an application of organic matter.
Another option is to apply blood, fish and bone early in the season, as this is a good all round balanced feed.
They also enjoy being mulched in spring to help retain moisture in the soil.
For a luscious leafy displays, feed with a balanced fertiliser between March and June. Do not feed after this period or you will encourage the sort of sappy growth that slugs adore!
If you put Borage leaves around the plant, they will start to rot and the slugs will prefer this over your hostas, thus helping to keep them off your plants. However when they've eaten the Borage you might want to add some more or they'll go for your luscious Hostas.
