Specific Planting:

It is best to plant shallots in a different place each year to prevent fungal spores building up in the soil and leading to disease. Do not incorporate fresh organic matter in to the soil immediately before planting as this can cause rotting. Instead feed the soil with organic matter in the previous autumn or use a balanced fertiliser, containing potash and phosphates as well as nitrogen, at the time of planting.
Plant the shallot 2.5cm deep in March or April, once danger of hard frosts has passed. Soils with a Ph 6.0-7.0 are ideal.
Push the bulbs gently into the ground so that the tip is just showing - don't firm them in too much. If the soil is heavy or particularly wet, place some coarse sand under each bulb. Plant individual bulbs around 5-10cm apart.
Water in after planting to ensure good soil contact for the roots to grow.

Specific Care:

Keep young plants well weeded and ensure they are not too shaded by other surrounding plants in the garden or allotmernt. Hoe carefully around the sets. Onion fly can be a problem particularly in hot weather or on very dry soils. The fly lays its eggs in the bulbs which are then eaten by the maggots. If infestation occurs dig up the affected plants and make sure there are no maggots left in the soil. Planting parsley around the onions is said to deter the fly. It is also good to plant shallots in soil where members of the umbellifer family, such as celery, have been previously grown. Soot is also said to be effective. Shallots should be ready to harvest in September-October.
The shallots can then be stored on trays or in nets in a light airy place.

Specific Feeding:

Little feeding is required if the soil is reasonably fertile. If necessary, use a general-purpose balanced fertiliser as a top dressing around growing bulbs.
