Genus: Euphorbia

Common Name: Grey Ghost

Latin Name: Euphorbia lactea cv. Grey Ghost form Cristata

Variety: Grey Ghost form Cristata

Family Name: Euphorbiaceae

Plant Description:

This is not a cactus but a succulent Euphorbia. Its extraordinary shape is due to an anomaly called fasciation in which the meristem (growing point) grows into a fan instead of upwards as normal. This plant tends not to really grow until very late in the season, (late July sometimes) but can be watered as for the other cacti. Partial shade seems to bring out the best colours; there are also green, yellow, pink, cream and mixed forms available. They are propagated in their millions in the Far East onto non-hardy stocks and therefore have far higher temperature requirements, minimum 13 degrees C. All Euphorbias have toxic sap, some extremely so and any sap that comes into contact with skin should be rinsed off immediately with cold or tepid water. In time this plant will form a convoluted rock-like mass to about 3ft tall and a foot or so across. Caution. Toxic if eaten / skin & eye irritant.

Latin Name Explanation:

Genus named after Euphorbus, physician to Juba, King of Mauritania. Lactea = milk

Preferred Aspect: Partial Shade (sun)

Height: 20cm

Spread: 20cm

Form: Evergreen

Hardiness: Frost Tender
