A tall erect annual up to 1m tall. It has a stiff sparsely branched stem bearing roughly toothed bluish-green pinnately lobed leaves. Or you may discover plants appearing after digging a previously undisturbed area and the dormant seeds in the ground then geminate. Widely naturalised in Europe as an escape from cultivation, growing on disturbed ground. Caution. Harmful if eaten.

Latin Name Explanation:

Papaver is the old Latin name for the plant.

Specific Planting:

Prepare the soil by forking it over, removing all perennial weed and breaking the soil down to a fine tilth. Rather than scattering the seed, it is better to make a series if shallow drills 1 cm deep and a hoes width apart over the area you wish the poppies to grow. Sow the seed along the drills, carefully rake soil back over them and water thoroughly. It will now be much easier to recognize the emerging seedlings, as they will be growing in straight lines along the length of the drills. Weed seedlings growing in between the drills can now be easily hoed off. Thin over crowded seedlings leaving the strongest plant.
