Plant the rhizomes on, or just below the surface of a well-drained soil in the spring, prior to growth. If purchased in a pot plant in well prepared soil that is as high as possible in organic matter, and weed free. Dig a hole a little larger than the pot or root ball, and place it in so that the base of the plant will be level with the surface of the soil. Fill in around the root ball with soil, gently firming as you go, but taking care not to compact the ground too much. Water in well, and if possible apply a mulch of well-rotted organic matter. Periodically check the plant until it is well established, for watering/feeding needs.
All that needs to be done to these is to remove the flower heads if they are not wanted for there winter form. The leaves may also be removed in the late winter, before they begin to grow in spring again. Removing the flower heads as they begin to form will direct more energy into the leaves, and therefore flavour.
Specific Feeding:
Herbaceous plants benefit from being mulched with a well rotted organic matter such as garden compost or farm yard manure. It should be added to the surface when the plants are dormant, and can offer protection from frost. Once a year is ideal, but if this is not possible then every 2 or 3 is good. The border will also benefit the addition of fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone, or another well balanced fertiiser.
