Plant dormant bulbs into very free draining gritty compost in the autumn and keep in an alpine house or cold greenhouse. Water the bulbs to keep the compost moist but not waterlogged. Control mice that might otherwise eat the bulbs. Plant bulbs 15cm below soil surface with the growing tip facing upwards. The best position is in full sun, but they will also tolerate light shade. Scatter bulbs randomly before planting and plant them where they fall to produce a natural effect. Or 10cm-20cm apart. You should plant your tulips from late September, October, November and even into December. Leaving planting until later helps protect against tulip fire disease. They will flower in April and May depending on where you live. In warmer climates they can flower as early as March. If you have very damp soil, some gardeners suggest that you delay planting until November and to put gravel in the bottom of the hole to aid drainage.
Once the flower has finished and the petals have dropped, dead head flower stalks leaving the leaves to die back naturally. In wet soils, you should lift tulip bulbs after flowering. This will reduce the risk of the bulbs rotting. Let the leaves die back before lifting, let them dry, then store in a cool, dry frost-free place. Replant the bulbs in November. It might be an idea to put grit in the bottom of the hole to aid drainage. If the plants become diseased, avoid planting bulbs in the same place, as they are likely to get infected as well.
Specific Feeding:
When planting you can add a slow release fertiliser such as bonemeal to the soil. Feed tulips when they are in flower, using a liquid feed such as Maxicrop. In a fertile soil they require no feeding.
