Plant Description:

Scarlet runner bean is one of the older runner beans native to North America and cultivated for its beautiful scarlet flowers rather than its beans. The beans are edible when thoroughly cooked. Raw beans contain a poisonous lectin which is neutralized with thorough cooking. The starchy roots are edible as are the green pods.

Specific Planting:

Runner beans are grown from seed sown in place. Space 4-8 in (10-20 cm) apart and plant 2-3 in (5-7.6 cm) deep. Be sure to provide a sturdy trellis, fence or pole teepee. Do not plant until soil temperature is at least 50 degrees F (10 degrees C).

Specific Care:

Provide netting or string to train the runner beans up trellises, or arbours, at least 6 feet high. T he vine is very showy and used to screen porches or twining up obelisks and other supports.


Specific Feeding:

Apply a liquid feed every fortnight during the summer. Avoid high nitrogen feeds. Mulch to conserve moisture.
